Storm Damage Roof Inspection: What to Do After Severe Weather
New Jersey sees its share of nor'easters, summer thunderstorms, and occasional hurricanes. After severe weather, many homeowners assume their roof is fine if it isn't actively leaking. That assumption is often wrong.
What Storm Damage Looks Like
Hail damage to asphalt shingles creates circular impact marks that crack the granule surface. Hail hits are not always visible from the ground but are unmistakable up close. Each impact point accelerates shingle deterioration and shortens roof lifespan.
Wind damage commonly causes shingles to lift, crack along the nail line, or blow off entirely. Even shingles that don't blow off can be "cracked" — lifted and reseated — which breaks the adhesive seal strip. These shingles look fine from below but allow water infiltration.
Debris damage — tree branches, fallen limbs, and airborne objects — can punch through shingles and even the decking beneath.
Immediate Steps After a Storm
-
Do not get on the roof yourself. Damaged roofs are slippery and unstable. Leave assessment to professionals.
-
Document visible damage from the ground. Take photos and video of anything you can see — missing shingles, debris on the roof, damaged gutters, bent flashing.
-
Check your attic. Look for daylight, fresh water stains, or wet insulation. These confirm active roof penetration.
-
Call your roofing contractor before your insurance company. A roofer can give you a damage assessment and documentation that strengthens your insurance claim. Your insurer's adjuster may undercount or miss damage.
-
Do not let storm chasers pressure you. After storms, out-of-state contractors flood New Jersey offering immediate work. Use a licensed, locally established contractor.
How Insurance Claims Work
Most homeowners insurance covers sudden, accidental damage from storms. The process:
- You file a claim with your insurer
- An adjuster inspects the roof
- The insurer issues a scope of loss and payment estimate
- Your contractor reviews the estimate — if damage was missed, they can submit a supplemental claim
- Work is scheduled
If your roof is older, your policy may pay actual cash value (depreciated) rather than replacement cost value. Review your policy before filing.
