Brick and Stone Masonry Restoration: Preserving NJ Homes' Exterior Character

Many of the most distinctive homes in North Jersey — colonials, tudors, cape cods with stone facades — have brick or natural stone exteriors that define their character. These materials were built to last generations, but they do require periodic maintenance to keep them sound and attractive.

What Masonry Restoration Encompasses

Masonry restoration is a broader term than masonry repair. Repair addresses a specific damage condition. Restoration takes a more comprehensive look at the entire masonry surface — its condition, its water resistance, its structural integrity — and brings it back to a proper functioning state.

This typically involves some combination of:

Tuckpointing — the core masonry maintenance task. Old mortar is ground out using specialized tools to a depth that ensures mechanical bonding, and new mortar is installed to match the original in color, composition, and tooled profile. On historic NJ homes, mortar matching is important both aesthetically and structurally.

Brick replacement — individual bricks that have spalled, cracked through their face, or pulled loose from the wall are removed and replaced with matching salvage brick. Finding matching brick for older homes requires experience.

Stone repointing — natural stone walls use a different mortar formulation than brick. Restoration work respects the original material and avoids over-hard mortars that can crack the stone.

Parging — a fresh mortar coat applied to foundation walls to restore their water-shedding surface and cosmetic appearance.

Waterproofing and sealers — breathable masonry waterproofers can be applied after restoration to reduce future water absorption without trapping moisture inside the wall.

Signs Your Masonry Needs Restoration

  • Mortar joints that are recessed more than 1/4 inch below the brick face
  • Brick faces that are flaking or delaminating
  • White mineral deposits (efflorescence) on the facade
  • Interior moisture staining on walls adjacent to masonry exteriors
  • Cracks running through brick units (not just mortar joints)
